Handy links for our article in issue 212 on taking technology out into the great outdoors
One of the biggest issues for technology in the outdoors is weatherproofing. to that end, it's worth looking at products from AquaPac, Ortlieb and OtterBox.
We also dug up a horde of links For GPS users, Walking World's Findawalk service, a great stash of information on GPS at the Scottish Mountaineering Club, and travelbygps.com, which does pretty much what it says and offers GPS routes for far flung places such as Mount Fuji in Japan and Jordan. For dedicated Munro-baggers, try Phil's GPS Waypoint resource pages, which has waypoints for Munros, Wainwrights and more.
Other good resources include Ordnance Survey's GPS guide and, of course, its truly excellent mapping products. one feature we like is the ability to order custom maps of the areas you want. This might sound a bit daft, but it's almost a given that the walking or riding route you plan always needs more than one sheet, no matter how short the distance you intend to travel.
EasyGPS is a free GPS plotting tool, and worth a look if you are just dipping your toe in the water. please read the tech support pages first, though - getting a GPS unit to talk to your computer is not necessarily an easy job.
Another GPS utility - literally - is GPSU. The freeware version has a limited capacity tos tore waypoints, but if you get on with it, the Shareware version promises more.
