Both We7 and Last.fm can be used to find new music, but Last.fm is better for this. It builds a set of users’ listening tastes using tracks and artists added to your favourites list and the music tastes of other users you have listened to.

Its recommendations are often very accurate. Last.fm can also search through your existing music collection to build an even better picture of the sort of music you will like. Every artist’s page on Last.fm has a link to a radio stream of similar music and displays biographies and touring schedules.

Both Last.fm and We7.com let you create playlists of your favourite tracks from different artists and albums and since they will be stored on the internet, you can play them from any PC.

After you log in to We7, you will see two tabs at the top for ‘Your queue’ and ‘Your playlists.’ When you enter a word in the search bar, a box will appear with a list of matching artists, songs and albums. Click on one of the results and you will see a list of the five most popular songs from the artist or tracks on the album.

Each song has small icons next to it. Hover your mouse pointer over the big blue ‘play’ button on the left and you can add the song or the entire album to your queue. Alternatively, hover your pointer over the ‘plus’ icon on the left and you can add the song to any of your existing playlists or create a new one.

If you click on the ‘Your queue’ tab at the top of the page, a box will appear with the list of songs in your queue. You can re-order this by dragging and dropping songs, or delete songs by clicking the red ‘X’ button on the right. There is also a button at the bottom of the box that creates a playlist using the songs in your queue.

If you find a song you want to share with someone else, both sites make it easy to let them know about it. You can send an email containing a link to a song by clicking the mail icon next to it. And We7 songs can be added to a website by copying and pasting a snippet of HTML code.

What’s the catch?
Fortunately, both Last.fm and We7 are legal services. This is because they pay royalties to artists and record labels, funded via advertising, subscriptions or commission from selling songs.

Adverts played at the start of songs on We7 help fund these royalties. If you download the songs there will be no adverts and every time you use the site you gain more credits for an advert-free day of listening to music ­ a small bar in the top right shows your progress. We7 is also funded by sponsorship deals.
