How can I fix System Restore?

Stop Norton Internet Security interfering with Windows System Restore

Change Norton's settings to fix Windows restore tools

I had a serious problem when using Windows System Restore: it would never complete and instead displayed an error message telling me that it couldn’t go back to a previous time.

I discovered that this problem was caused by Norton Internet Security as Norton Product Tamper Protection stops System Restore from changing its files making the restore process fail.

The fix is to switch off Norton Product Tamper Protection.

Open the Norton Internet Security window and click on Computer Settings. Click Miscellaneous Settings and then select the option to turn off Product Tamper Protection in the Product Security section. It will not let you turn it off permanently; instead a window will appear asking how long it should be disabled for. Select a duration and then click OK.

It should now be possible to run System Restore and the Tamper Protection will turn itself back on automatically. I have done this on Windows Vista Home Premium and XP.

System Restore

I regret that I have tried the above as mentioned in the article by Ian Meikle on numerous occasions but without success. Any other ideas would be more than useful. Iam using Windows XP with Norton Internet Security

systems restore

I use XP Home and use Zonealarm Firewall & AVG antivirus. We have 2 desk top comps + 2 laptops all have same security. We have NEVER been able to get a systems restore point to work on any of our comps or laptops. I have asked on other forums too & get a response - "Don't bother with it, it's better to do a back up". I own Acronis Image back up (bought new last year) and cannot fathopm out how to do it. If I do an ordinary back up it just backs up My Docs & other (useless to me)files like Windows calendar etc. I would really like to get Systems Restore to work. Can any-one help??

norton -symantic problem

problems like this will always occur with this product. Personally I can't understand anyone who would want to turn over the control of their pc to a piece of software known to do what has just been been described. I had the same probs with windows 98se, still there apparently. Wouln't have Norton?Symantic as a gift, which is what it is!! I now use Kaspersky- and no probs.
