Free versus paid: backup software

Keep your data safe with reliable backup software

After installing Acronis True Image, creating the first backup is simple

Experts’ choice for backup

Acronis True Image Home 2011
Making an image file of a computer’s hard disk is an excellent way of backing up everything on it, including the operating system, documents and software.

Acronis True Image Home 2011 makes this rather technical procedure simple, with an uncluttered interface and lots of automated tools.

You can create a rescue disk to help recover a PC that won’t start Windows, and the Non-Stop Backup can take regular snapshots.

Backups can be saved to DVD, another hard disk or storage on a network.

The alternative: Macrium Reflect Free

Reflect can do just about everything Acronis True Image can, apart from back up individual files.

But the main task of this type of program is full PC backups and recovery, and Macrium Reflect Free does this well.

Backup images can be restored using a rescue CD that can be created from within the program, and there’s also a scheduling tool.

Wizards guide you through all the steps, making it a fairly simple tool to use.

If you also want to create file or folder backups, we would recommend the easy-to-use GFI Backup Home Edition as a free companion program.

Total saving: £40
