A mobile phone's formatting function is only allowing use of 2GB of a 4GB memory card. Find out how to access all the storage space
Q I have a 4GB Micro SDHC memory card that I want to use in my LG Viewty KU990i mobile phone. However, when I used the phone’s format option to clear the memory card, it divided it into a 2GB partition that I can use and another 2GB, that’s marked as ‘unallocated’ and is therefore unusable.
How do I get to use the full 4GB? I am using Windows XP on my computer.

A The problem here is that the phone’s formatting tool uses the old Fat 16 file system, which has a maximum partition size of 2GB. This is an odd choice because the phone itself can actually read larger memory cards.
The answer, then, is to format the card using the Fat 32 file system. You can do this by using a memory card reader attached to your PC – right-click the card, choose Format and chose Fat32 from the menu.
