Google occasionally replaces the logo on its home page with 'doodles'
Q I have an HP G7000 running Microsoft Vista. Recently, my Kaspersky anti-virus software failed to update. Later, when I fired up my web browser to use the Google home page, I got what can best be described as a cartoon picture – the word ‘Google’ was depicted as various objects, such as tables, chairs and brooms.
Initially, I assumed that Google had changed its design but it only happened once. Then, a few days later, a similar thing happened, but this time the word ‘Google’ was much more difficult to read.
I have not read anywhere that Google has changed its design – could I have a virus? I have ditched Kaspersky and installed Bullgaurd and Webroot Spy Sweeper but neither has found anything. What’s going on?

A This is nothing to worry about. You are encountering Google ‘doodles’ – topical cartoons that the company, from time to time, will put up in place of the familiar Google logo.
It’s a tradition that dates back to 1998, when Google founders playfully tweaked the logo by adding a small stick man to celebrate their attendance at Nevada’s Burning Man Festival.
In the intervening years Google has created hundreds of these comical riffs on its corporate logo. Indeed, barely a week goes by now when the normal company logo isn’t briefly replaced by some timely interpretation.
If you’re interested, you will find the historical collection at Google Logos.
