The problem may be caused by the graphics card, its drivers or the monitor
Q Sometimes when I start up my Windows 7 PC, it displays the message ‘Out of range'. The computer sounds like it's starting as normal but I have to restart it before Windows will launch.
This has been happening for some time and I can't pinpoint any specific program or recent installation as the culprit. The PC is still under warranty.

A This problem is typically related to the graphics card, its drivers or the attached monitor. A common cause is the attachment of a new monitor that has a different resolution to that which Windows is trying to output through the graphics card.
However, as this problem is intermittent and usually resolved by restarting the PC, this is unlikely to be the case here.
Instead, we suspect either corrupt drivers or a loose or faulty graphics card or monitor connections.
First check all the external connections: make sure the monitor plug is firmly attached to the graphics card's socket, making use of the screw attachments (if present) to ensure the two are snug.
If this doesn't solve the problem, disconnect the PC from the mains, put on an anti-static wrist strap (costing a few pounds from an electronics store), use a screwdriver to open up the PC and then check that the graphics card is correctly seated in its expansion slot.
Use firm thumb pressure to push it home and, again, screw it down if the case allows. There's a possibility that such actions may invalidate the computer's warranty – so check with the manufacturer before proceeding down this path.
If the problem persists, re-install the graphics card drivers. You didn't tell us what card the PC uses but many computers use models from Nvidia.
To check in Windows 7, click Start followed by Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, Display, Change display settings and Advanced settings. The graphics card type is shown on the Adapter tab.
If it's Nvidia, visit their download page and follow the instructions to download and install the drivers.
If all else fails, the PC is under warranty, so call the supplier and arrange for a repair.
