Add useful information into a header or footer using Microsoft Office 2010
Q Generally, I find Microsoft Office 2010 easier to use than earlier versions of the suite. However, I cannot figure out how to place a Word document’s file name and file path into the footer.
Previously, this was simple – just select the relevant option from the Insert AutoText dropdown menu on the Header and Footer toolbar.
I have searched through the available ribbons and dropdowns but cannot find an equivalent option. Has Microsoft removed this facility from Word 2010?

A No, the option is still there but it’s been shifted to a place that’s perhaps rather less than obvious.
First, insert the footer as usual (click the Insert tab followed by Header or Footer in the in the Header & Footer group and choose the desired footer) then click within the footer to place the text cursor where you want the file name to appear.
Now choose the Design tab from the ribbon and click Quick Parts. Click Field and choose File name from the Field names list.
As you also want to include the file name’s full path (thus showing where it lives on your PC’s hard disk), click to place a tick in the ‘Add path to file name’ box.
