Use Thunderbird Portable to save copies of your email
While I find it convenient to use Google mail to access my email online, I also use Mozilla Thunderbird as a backup just in case something goes wrong with the account. For added convenience I use the Portable version of Thunderbird so the program and the backed-up emails are in the same place.
Once you have downloaded Thunderbird Portable, log into Gmail and click on the settings link at the top right of the page. Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and select the option to enable IMAP. Click on the 'Save Changes' button. Download and install Thunderbird Portable.
When it starts, enter your details and click on Continue. Ensure Thunderbird is using the IMAP option and click on Manual Setup. Click the Synchronization & Storage option and ensure the top option is selected. Click OK and Thunderbird will download your email messages to the PC.
