Use an online file-sharing service to speed up downloads between you and others
Ge.tt is free to use and, as we write, it is still in beta (test) phase, meaning it may not work perfectly at all times. Here’s how to start using it. To begin, visit the Ge.tt homepage. To manage files uploaded to Ge.tt, it is necessary to register for an account. This isn’t a requirement for casual sharers, so if you only want to trial the service don’t worry about it for now. However, registration is free and buys more time for shared files to be stored online – currently 90 days (compared to 30 days for files uploaded by non-registered users). If you want to register, click the Sign Up button at the top right, fill in the short form and click Create account. Otherwise, just click the gold Select files button in the middle of the page.
Use the Open dialogue box to navigate to where the file or files to be uploaded are stored, click to select them and then click Open. By holding down the Control (Ctrl) key, you can select multiple files before clicking Open. The file(s) begin to upload, but right away Ge.tt displays a download link, just below the social-media buttons alongside the ‘Share now on’ heading. To copy this link to the Windows Clipboard, click the Copy link. If you want to add more files to the upload, click Add files – these can be added at any time. Ge.tt doesn’t publish a maximum size for uploads, but we’ve used the service to share files measuring hundreds of megabytes (MB). To remove files from the share, click the relevant ‘remove’ link, followed by ‘yes’ to confirm.
Now pass on the share link to the intended recipient. If you clicked the Copy link in Step 2, just use the Ctrl and V keyboard shortcut to paste the link into another Windows application, like an email program. When the recipient clicks this link, they will see a list of shared files available to be downloaded. The content of certain file types, such as images, will be previewed. To begin downloading a file, the recipient just clicks the Download link and follows the prompt – and they can start the download even if your computer is still busy uploading.
