The Ubuntu Software Manager is an easy way to install extra programs

The latest version of Ubuntu, 11.04, has a different look to previous versions. But there is just as much to do as before so we will take a look at where all the important stuff is.

Launcher
The old Applications menu has gone and in its place is the Launcher down the left hand side of the screen. This shows all running programs with icons for frequently used programs such as Firefox, LibreOffice Writer and the Software centre. Click on an icon to start the program and you will see a triangle appear to show that the program is running.

If the program you want isn't shown, click on the magnifying glass with a plus symbol to search for more programs. Start typing the name of the program you want [gpodder] and the results will be shown. Click on the icon to start the program.

To keep a program in the launcher, right-click on its icon and select ‘Keep in Launcher'.

Software Centre
Installing new software is easy. Click on the Software Centre icon in the Launcher. You can either browse through the different categories or click in the box at the top right and search for software.

Find your files
The home folder for your documents has stayed the same and you can find your files in a couple of different ways. Click on the top icon in the Launcher to see your home folder.

If you have a specific file in mind click on the bottom icon in the Launcher and start typing the name to search for it. This only searches the file name but also shows recently used files.

Wireless networks
The wireless network icon is at the top right of the screen. Left-click on it once to see a list of wireless networks in range. Click on a network to connect to it. If the network is hidden, click on the Connect to Hidden Wireless Network option and enter the details for the network.

Logging off and shutting down
The power icon in the top right-hand corner is used to shut down the computer or log out. You can quickly switch to another account. One new feature to Ubuntu 11.04 is the Guest session. It's ideal if a friend wants to use the web; the guest account has internet access but cannot open any of your personal files. The bottom option, System Settings, is the equivalent of Control Panel in Windows.

I'm worried by the need to know part of the name on a subject that is new to me. Also with my filing system I know exactly where my files, photo's etc are.
