Microsoft now only offers Windows Live Photo Gallery, which Mr Taylor is having trouble mastering. We suggest he gives our free favourite, Google Picasa, a try
Q I recently bought a new Windows 7 PC. This appears to have replaced Vista’s Windows Photo Gallery tool with an updated version, called Windows Live Photo Gallery. However, I just simply cannot get to grips with this.
In my opinion, it is far too clever by half. All I want is a simple program that allows me to catalogue and tag photos and Vista’s built-in tool fulfilled this need.
I still have the Vista computer so I’m wondering if it is possible to somehow uninstall Windows Live Photo Gallery from Windows 7 and replace it with the program that’s on my Vista PC? If not, can you recommend a photo-cataloguing program as simple as Vista’s?
Derek Taylor
A It’s not feasible to move this particular application from one Windows computer to another. The old Windows Photo Gallery tool is no more, we’re afraid – Microsoft offers only Windows Live Photo Gallery now. There are dozens of alternatives, though.
Google Picasa is a perennial favourite of Computeractive staff and readers. It is reasonably simple to use, though it is a fair bit more advanced that the old Windows Photo Gallery. Even so, it is free to download so you’ve little to lose by giving it a go: the latest version can be downloaded by clicking here.
