How to use explanatory notes in a Libre Office or Open Office document
If you are working on a document with several other people, you may want to leave explanatory notes. This is also useful for documents that are only worked on rarely. Libre Office (and Open Office) has notes built in called Comments.
Move the cursor to the area of the document that needs explanation, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press N. A yellow box will appear on the right of the document where you can leave your note.
All comments are named so if you haven’t set your name, click on the Tools menu then Options. Click on User Data and enter your name.

useless "feature"
this would be great, if it worked, like MS Word. But in the real world, it's incredibly buggy and slows down the app to unbearable levels on long documents. Stay away.
