Group your Excel rows and columns for easier viewing

If you have a large spreadsheet in Excel it can be difficult to see the where you are. Using groups will add icons that can be quickly collapsed or expanded

Using Groups means more control over a large Excel document

When working with large spreadsheets it can be easy to end up with information a long way away from the row or column headings. Freezing or hiding sections of the spreadsheet can help but neither is very flexible.

The best alternative is to use groups. This will add icons that can be used to quickly hide and reveal sections of the spreadsheet.

Select a range of rows or columns. Click on the Data tab in the Ribbon. Either click on the Group button or the Group option in its submenu.

A bar will appear above the spreadsheet with numbers at the left that can be used to show the different levels of grouping. Alternatively use the plus and minus icons to expand and collapse sections of the website.

Both rows and columns can be grouped at the same time. Click on the Ungroup button to reverse the changes.
