This clever built-in effect can create an impressive looking title
There is a very clever effect in the free image editor Gimp that can create a translucent title from solid text.
Open the base image and press T to switch to the text-entry mode. Draw a square where you want the text to appear. Select the font and size, and leave the colour as black. Type in the Text entry box and click on Close when you are finished.
Click on the Filters Menu, then Light and Shadow and then Xach effect. Leave the options as they are for the moment and click on OK.
When the filter has finished, you will need to hide the original text: click on the Layers tab in the Toolbox (it looks like a stack of three sheets of paper).
Click on the eye icon next to the layer with a T icon and your text. The translucent effect will now be visible.
The effects can be used with other shapes too, not just text.
