You can spend any amount of money on devices to keep a laptop cool, but one reader has a novel suggestion that won't cost a penny
Even after blowing compressed air through my laptop it was still heating up and its fan was getting louder. The dining room table on which I work was also threatening to scorch under this heat.
Things then got even worse after I added an Expresscard for a USB3 external disk. It looked as though the cost of the Expresscard and the USB3 external disk had been a waste of money, or I had to consider spending more cash on an external fan or cooling tray.
In fact, the solution was simple. I pulled the leaves of the table apart so that most of the laptop had air beneath it. Now it runs at a much cooler (normal) temperature. Plus, I don’t have to explain scorch marks on the table.
If you work on a solid surface, securely place your laptop’s feet on two pieces of wood (one each side and not covering any vents) to allow greater air flow beneath your machine.
