If the account was originally set up using a Googlemail address Facebook won't recognise a Gmail address. It must be added to Facebook's account settings
Q Your answer to Geoff Wilkins’ question about switching from a Googlemail email address to the simpler Gmail variant answered most of my concerns about Google’s offer to switch from the former to the latter.
However, I’m still left wondering what would happen to my Facebook page, which is linked to my Googlemail email address? Would I need two addresses or will Facebook recognise both Gmail and Googlemail email address as one and the same?
James Thompson
A From Facebook’s perspective, nothing would need to change – you would continue to log in with your (old) Googlemail email address that you used to originally register and with your usual Facebook password.
Also, any updates or alerts that are sent by Facebook to your old Googlemail email address will continue to be delivered to the equivalent Gmail address. So the shortest answer is that nothing about your day-to-day experience will change.
However, if you try to log in to Facebook using the Gmail version of your email address, then it won’t work because Facebook will not recognise it.
If you want the ability to log in with your Gmail address, log in to Facebook as usual (using the Googlemail address), click the down-pointing arrow at the top right and choose Account Settings.
Now click the Edit link alongside Email, then click the Add another email link and type in your Gmail address into the box provided, then click Save Changes. A confirmation email will be sent to the address and you’ll need to click the link this contains to activate the new email address.
From now on, you’ll be able to log in using either your Googlemail or Gmail address.
