Can I delete Windows 7 theme images that I don't want or like?

There are two ways of getting rid of unwanted Windows 7 theme images

Windows 7 desktop theme images are small files of about 1MB each

Q  You recently published a workshop showing how to download additional Desktop themes for Windows 7.

However, although there are many good photos, there are some I dislike, so I wonder if there is a way to delete the unwanted images?

I found a relevant file in my Downloads folder, which rejoices in the long-winded file extension ‘.themepack’ – but it looks decidedly uneditable. I had hoped to find a simple folder with a collection of JPEGs or whatever.

Is there a way to remove the shots I don’t want?

A  Yes, there are two ways – you can either prevent particular images from being displayed or you can delete unwanted photos, thus freeing up a (very small) bit of hard disk space.

Click Start followed by Control Panel, then click the Change the theme link under Appearance and Personalization. Click to select the relevant theme and then click the Desktop Background link below: the dialogue will change to show thumbnail versions of all the images used in the wallpaper rotation.

Now, use the tick boxes to indicate those images that should be included in the rotation. As well, note the folder path above the spread of thumbnails.

If you want to delete one or more photos, launch Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder path noted above and then just delete the files as normal. Note, though, that the individual image files are rarely more than about a megabyte in size, so the space-saving is minimal.

Theme pictures in W7

You can add or delete pictures from Windows & Themes by going to c:/Windows/web/wallpaper/folder. And replacing "C:" with your main drive letter, and "folder" with the theme you want to change.
