Windows 8 can integrate with Windows Live Accounts

Unsurprisingly, Windows 8 works best when if you sign in with a Windows Live account. There is an option to set this up during installation but all is not lost if you didn't choose to do this as it is simple to add at any time. If you don't have a Windows Live account, you can click here to sign up.

Press the Windows key and C to open the Charms menu and then click on Settings. Click on PC Settings at the bottom.

Click on Users on the left-hand side of the PC Settings App and you should see your account at the top of the right-hand side of the screen.

Click on the 'Switch to a Microsoft Account' button. Enter the password you are using to log in to Windows at the moment and click on Next.

Enter your Windows Live email address, click on Next and enter your Windows Live password. Click on Next.

Windows will ask for some additional information to help recover your password should you ever forget it. Enter a telephone number and alternative email address and click on Next. Windows will show a quick summary of the changes. Click on Finish.

You will see that your username has changed in the PC Settings window and your Windows Live email address will be shown beneath it.

You will need to sign out and sign in again to complete the process so press the Windows key to return to Metro. Click on your name at the top right and then click on Sign out.

Drag the login screen up to reveal the user list. You will see that your user name has been updated to your Windows Live identity. Enter your Windows Live password to sign on.
