There are lots of great things you can do on a computer, but not all of them are suitable for children. With this in mind, parental controls are a must. They come built into Bitdefender Total Security 2013 and setting them up is easy.
First go to the My Bitdefender menu in the top right hand corner of the main screen of Total Security 2013. The third option down is for Parental Control, click on it. This will open the web browser, if you're not logged into your My Bitdefender account do so at this point.
Setting up parental controls is easy. The first step is to create profiles for any children who you want to monitor. Give the profile a name, then select a gender an age. This will have a sway on how the profile is configured to make it age and gender apprpriate.
The next screen explains that in order to use parental controls a piece of software or an app will need to be installed on your child's device. This can either be a Windows PC or Android smartphone. Apple devices are not supported.

Install the software on the child's device and link it to your My Bitdefender account. With this done, the device will then appear in the parental controls setup screen. Click next to see a list of devices, select the one you want to use parental controls with and click next.
The final screen displays options for what is monitored - phone calls, messages, social media, software and more besides. Most things that can be done on a PC or an Android smartphone can be controlled. How much you monitor can be personalised and changed to suit your needs.
With all this done the final screen is the dashboard that displays all the information parental controls monitors. If you want to change settings, this can be done at any time.

Qustodio is better
Don't get me wrong. I've been using BD as my primary AV for a long time and love it. However, its not meant to be a parental control software. If you would like to administer some control over what your kids watch online, you need an app like Qustodio. Just like BD is a great AV, Qustodio is a great parental control software. Light, unintrusive, and easy to use. The fact that its free is just an added bonus.
