Use the Charms to shut down or restart a Windows 8 computer

The quickest way to shut down Windows 8 is by using the Charms. Move the mouse to the top-right hand corner or press Windows and C. Click on the Power icon and then select Shut down or Restart.

If you want to log out so that someone else can use the computer, click on your name at the top right hand corner of the Windows 8 Start Screen. Click on Sign out to return to the lock screen.

An alternative if someone just wants to quickly check their email is to switch to their account. This means that you won't have to close what you are doing. Instead of clicking on Sign out, click on their name instead. Make sure they sign out when they are finished so you can sign on through the Lock Screen.
