Rescue mode lets you scan and disinfect your hard disk from outside the Windows operating system. This is very useful for getting rid of a virus that has stopped Windows from booting properly.

There are two ways to access rescue mode. In Bitdefender Total Security 2013 go to Antivirus and click on the arrow next to Scan Now. A drop=down menu will appear with the last option being for rescue mode. Clicking on this will display a warning message asking if you want to reboot the computer. Select yes.

When it restarts a menu will appear asking you to pick an operating system. Choose Bitdefender Rescue Image. You can then follow the simple steps to perform a system scan.

If your computer no longer boots into Windows, rescue mode can still be used. Turn on the computer and before the Windows logo appears press the space bar. A menu will appear asking you to choose an operating system. Once again choose Bitdefender Rescue Image. You can now scan your system in rescue mode and hopefully get it working again.

A really useful feature when things go truly pear-shaped.
