Simple clear advice in plain English

Brother HL-5130

This laser printer is the newest printer from Brother.

If you print a lot of documents, you simply must invest in a laser printer. They are fast, produce excellent quality prints and cost far less to run than inkjet printers. The 600 x 600dpi HL5130 is the newest printer from Brother and offers plenty of features.

The promised print speed of 17 pages per minute did not quite materialise but other than that it is an excellent performer. It is very simple to set-up, thanks to excellent documentation and a simple driver installation. It can be connected using either a parallel or USB port so it works with all versions of Windows from 95 onwards and any Mac using OS 8.2 or better.

With printing costs of roughly 1.2p per page, it is frugal to run and, as with most laser printers, the print quality was very sharp indeed. Changing the toner cartridge is simple, but seeing as each refill is good for 3,500 pages, you won't be doing that too often.

If you do lots of black and white printing, supplementing your colour inkjet printer with a mono laser makes sense. The HL-5130 is worth considering, but shop around for the best price before buying.
