Steganos Secure Filesharing 6

The idea behind Steganos Secure Filesharing 6 is a simple one, but slightly dubious. It allows users of file-sharing applications to hide traces of their downloading activities - legal or otherwise.

The program supports most of the popular peer-to-peer programs, such as Kazaa, Kazaa Lite, eMule, Morpheus, iMesh and Soulseek. New to this version is the ability to encrypt files in real time. This means that your downloads are scrambled and can only be translated back into their original form with a password. Steganos makes sure that you choose a secure password by comparing your chosen code with a built-in dictionary of common entries.

Getting started is simple. After installation, you'll be asked to set up a new 'Media Safe'. This is a secure area of your PC that is given its own drive letter, so you'll be able to treat it as though it were a separate disk in which to store your files. Provided your hard disk is large enough, this can be up to 32Gb in size - an ample amount of storage unless you're an extremely prolific file-sharer.

The application automatically detects any file-sharing programs that are already installed on your PC, so files downloaded in advance of installing Steganos Secure Filesharing 6 will automatically be transferred to the Media Safe.

One important function of Secure Filesharing 6 is its ability to destroy evidence of you having used file-sharing software. Sadly, this is limited to removing stored data such as your file-sharing search history. The folders and application files for each file-sharing program remain in their original place on your computer.

If you're worried about fines from recording industry bodies, Secure Filesharing 6 won't completely protect you, since your downloading activities can still be tracked without anyone physically searching through files on your PC.

If you're after a product that hides your activities on a local level - possibly from other users of your PC - then Staganos Secure Filesharing 6 will suffice.
