Review: Epson Picturemate PM240 photo printer

Good-quality pictures that come at a price

Epson’s bucket-shaped Picturemate PM240 is the company’s answer to portable printing. It can be carried around by its handle and feels pretty durable, even if it isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing item in the world.

Lift the lid and you’ll discover a 2.5in screen (the largest of all the printers on test) along with a set of basic, easy-to-use controls. A further flap on the unit’s front folds down to reveal an output tray and slots for a multitude of memory card types.

Like all the portable printers, the PM240 is only capable of printing to smaller-sized paper (such as 6x4in photos), but does so at high resolutions.

Indeed, the Epson’s test prints were probably the best quality from among the small-form printers, with warm, vibrant tones and high contrast levels. Unfortunately, this all comes at a high price – about £130 – making the PM240 the most expensive printer in our round-up.

This article is part of a group test of photo printers.
