Hannspree HN198

A basic, cheap monitor

Hannspree’s HN198 monitor is no looker. It’s not ugly as such, but in an era of improving monitor design it is decidedly 1990s in style. But that’s forgivable when the price is so low – we were able to find it for around £120 at www.ebuyer.com and similar shops, which is very good for a brand-named screen.

The front panel includes reasonable speakers and a control panel, with a useful onscreen menu for changing settings. It has both DVI and VGA inputs as well as an audio connection on the rear panel. Picture quality was good – although not as bright as the LG, it’s perfectly useable, and the image is sharp and clear. For a good-value monitor, and if you’re more worried about picture quality than monitor design, the HS198 is an excellent choice.
