Simple clear advice in plain English

MSI DR8-A2

A single-layer, 8-speed drive for burning DVDs

While some manufacturers are bringing out dual-layer recordable DVD drives, the discs are quite scarce and more expensive than standard discs. In addition, 12-speed and 16-speed drives are starting to appear. Discs that are good enough to take advantage of the faster technology are also few and far between.

Those of us who haven't yet made the leap to burning DVDs are probably best off sticking to standard, single-layer, 8-speed drives for now, like the MSI DR8-A2.

The DR8-A2 comes with software to create DVDs, edit digital video and play DVD movies. It will read and write DVD-R/RWs and DVD+R/RWs and read DVD-ROMs. When using DVD+R it created a full disc in just under eight minutes; this dropped to just under 10 minutes with DVD-Rs.

Like all recordable DVD drives it will read and write CD-Rs and CD-RWs, although it is slightly slower creating these discs than a dedicated CD-writer.
