Review: Navigon 8110 satellite navigation

navigon-8110

We recently looked at Navigon's 2110max product, which is an excellent budget navigator that covers all the bases for basic navigation.

The same company's 8110 does the same but adds almost all the extras you can think of. Those include a Bluetooth connection to a phone so that the 8110 can be used to make calls to local points of interest.

Then there's the full European mapping, the panorama view, which shows the landscape in three dimensions with hills and valleys, voice recognition so you can navigate without taking your hands off the wheel and an FM radio transmitter to use the car radio for listening to directions and for phone calls.

In addition there's a digital photo viewer, music player and the same speed camera database that's in the 2110max. It also comes with Lane Assistant, which shows helpful guidance on exactly which lane to take on motorway junctions.

The 2110max's most impressive feature was its clear, smart-looking maps, with the roads picked out in white and orange against a dark grey. This works well compared with the more garish maps of other devices, and it reappears in the 8110.

It's an excellent navigator, but we'd question whether all those extra features are worth the £200 price premium – we'd be perfectly happy with the 2110max and the extra cash.
