Simple clear advice in plain English

Philips DVDRW824

So you want to buy a DVD burner but is this the right one for you?

If it's your burning ambition to create DVDs with your PC, you will have noticed that there are now dozens of devices on the market that let you do that, and choosing which one is right for you can be confusing.

Philips has been knocking out home technology equipment for many years and it shows straight away with the DVDRW824. The box is attractive, covered in impressive claims and inside it is an excellent user's guide, which is detailed and clear enough to put even the shakiest PC user at ease.

The majority of manuals with this sort of product tell you how to connect the drive and leave you to muddle through the software on your own, but Philips has also included a number of 'getting started' guides for its bundled software - Nero Burning Rom and Sonic My DVD.

Philips claims this to be the fastest recordable DVD drive around, writing DVD+R discs at eight-speed. It can write to DVD+R/+RW discs but not -R/-RW. More interesting to us than outright speed are the features which continually assess the quality of DVDs you are using and monitor the temperature of the discs to ensure reliable burning.
