LG GSA-5120D

A dual-layer compatible DVD rewriter

A recordable DVD drive can offer almost limitless additional storage capacity to a PC and, for anyone reluctant to try fitting a drive internally, an external drive like the GSA-5120D from LG is a great alternative.

To connect the drive, just plug it into a spare FireWire or USB 2 port. All the cables you'll need to do this are included in the box. If you are using Windows XP, the computer should recognise the device automatically.

It handles the DVD+R/RW, -R/RW and DVD-RAM formats and is a dual-layer writer, meaning you can store up to 8.5Gb of data (about four hours of high-quality video) on a dual-layer disc. These aren't cheap at the moment - around £9 per disc - but prices are bound to fall in time.

It's not very fast, taking over 13 minutes to create a full DVD. But at £117, it offers good value and the discs will play in all DVD players.
