Simple clear advice in plain English

Apple iLife '04

Use this software to manage and keep track of all your media files.

All new Apple Mac computers include a free suite of applications that includes the iTunes music player, iPhoto for editing digital photos, and iMovie and iDVD for video editing and creating DVD discs.

The iLife '04 package includes upgraded versions of these applications with some new features. However, the real star is a brand-new program called GarageBand - a music-making program that allows you to create your own songs using your Mac.

You can choose from 1,000 'loops' (pre-recorded backing tracks) and then create your own melodies by using 50 'software instruments' that simulate sounds such as guitar, drums and keyboards. You can also use a microphone to record vocals straight onto the Mac or connect instruments such as USB keyboards or guitars. There's also a selection of audio effects, such as reverb and a wah-wah guitar sound that you can use to add the finishing touches.

Like all the best Apple software, GarageBand is well designed and really easy to use, so iLife '04 is a 'must-have' item for any Mac user interested in making music.

Overall: The new versions of the software are no big deal but GarageBand will be a big hit for music makers.
