Simple clear advice in plain English

AJP M3000N-Centrino

A Centrino notebook that prides itself on mobility.

Notebook computers were primarily designed to allow users to compute away from the confines of a desk. Although there has been a shift towards powerful but cumbersome desktop replacements, many buyers still require a notebook which is properly portable. The AJP M3000N exemplifies this point by using Centrino technology.

A full explanation of Centrino can be found in issue 137 but essentially it means that the computer will have excellent battery life, integrated Wi-Fi and a Pentium 4 Mobile processor. As we expected, the AJP's battery life was excellent, running for two-and-a-half hours before needing a recharge. The processor is a 1.3GHz Pentium-M with 512Mb of memory, which makes Windows applications run smoothly and quickly. That may sound slow for a modern PC processor but it offers similar performance to standard Pentium 4 processors between 1.8 and 2GHz.

The 40Gb hard disk provides acres of storage for a compact device. A bright 14.1in TFT display offers a maximum resolution of 1400 x 1050 but using this would mean that icons appear very small. The integrated graphics chip is limited to Windows work and isn't suitable for gaming unless you are not at all demanding. It comes with a DVD/CD-RW drive, which can be swapped for various extras, such as additional hard disks, a second battery or a DVD-RW drive, for an additional cost.

As well as integrated Wi-Fi, there is also a network socket and a modem port. Further ports include a mini-FireWire socket, four USB 2 ports, an external monitor plug and the regular array of audio connections.

Perhaps the AJP's best trait is its design. Built with a durable magnesium alloy lid, it can withstand a few knocks. The black keyboard and trackpad combine to make the AJP a very sharp looker. Although heavier than some at 2.3kg, it still feels compact. It comes bundled with Easy CD Creator, WinDVD 4, a leather carry case and a three-year warranty.
