Is this the first PC you wouldn't mind having in your living room?
Microsoft has big plans for Windows. Later this year, we will see PCs with a special version of Windows XP called Media Center Edition, which is designed to make your PC a flexible alternative to your hi-fi, television and games console. Some manufacturers are impatient though, and have friendly, flexible PC systems ready to go now.
Despite the funky looks, Systemax's Encore has plenty in common with a standard PC. At its heart is a 2.66GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512Mb of memory, which means the Encore can do anything any other PC can, despite looking like a hi-fi. It can also perform as a hi-fi, playing back CDs and MP3s, and tuning into FM radio when the rest of the PC is dormant.
The graphics card is based around nVidia's GeForce FX5200 chip, which makes it a respectable rather than great games performer. What makes it more interesting is that the graphics card has an integrated TV tuner.
This means the PC can be used for watching TV and, using the supplied software, set up as a hard disk video recorder. The 120Gb hard disk is big enough for you to record several episodes of your favourite soap without worrying about running out of space.
Getting the Encore up and running is a little more difficult than a standard PC, as the layout is less familiar. There are manuals for the radio and hi-fi features but little information about the TV and general PC side of things. If you're an experienced PC user, you'll cope, but novices may be a little overwhelmed. It is supplied with an excellent 17in CTX TFT display, Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse and a set of Videologic ZXR-500 surround sound speakers. All the usual PC ports are in place, as well as a memory card reader for easy transfer of digital photos and MP3s to external devices.
The Encore is a very interesting system and possibly a sign of things to come. At the moment though, it is probably best suited to enthusiasts.
