Content Barrier 2004

In addition to being a fountain of information, the internet is also home to a world of unsavoury content. Thankfully, there is a lot of software that restricts access to the web's more sinister side. One such program is Content Barrier 2004.

In practice, the software is actually too effective - curbing admission to literally every website we tried to visit. After careful configuration though, we were able to filter out pornography and violence-related sites, while leaving 'safe' web pages open for access.

Unfortunately, after a bit of tinkering we were soon able to gain entry to a variety of search engines. From there it was easy to locate the offensive material Content Barrier 2004 claims to restrict. Also, despite the developer's claims to monitor online conversations, both AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger went completely unchecked. Considering the controversy currently linked to instant messaging applications, we had hoped for better policing.

Content Barrier 2004 provides a level of protection unlikely to be beaten by novices but could easily be circumvented by a more computer-savvy youngster.
