A TFT monitor that stands out from the crowd thanks to some interesting additions.
TFT monitors are a dime-a-dozen these days, so choosing the best one for you can be a tricky proposition.
ADI's latest offering, the Microscan I700, is a 1280 x 1024 resolution, 17in TFT model that tries to distinguish itself from the crowd with a number of interesting additions.
These include a unique interchangeable Feature Box that (in the standard I700 offering) houses a pair of fairly decent-sounding speakers and two USB ports.
This box can be replaced with a far more interesting version that does away with the USB ports in favour of a TV tuner (with remote control) that allows you to watch terrestrial broadcasts.
The I700's other main feature is its swivelling screen, which can twist vertically through approximately 180 degrees. Unfortunately, you can't swivel it horizontally unless you first disconnect the feature box.
Also, unless you want to place the monitor on the floor and use it while you stand, we found absolutely no use for such an extreme vertical tilt option.
Image quality on the Microscan I700 is fairly good, but the quality of the picture worsens if you're viewing it from a severe angle.
We tested the monitor with a variety of applications, including games, and despite its relatively high response time, it performs well enough to appeal to the average user.
Unfortunately, the I700 does not feature a digital input socket, meaning images were not reproduced as sharply as on some 17in panels. The monitor also has difficulty in automatically detecting a new visual signal.
For instance, if you move it from one computer to another without restarting, you'll have to manually tell it to accept the new input. This is not a major cause for concern, but it can prove frustrating at times.
Minor complaints aside, the I700 is an attractive screen that is easy to use and provides an adequate range of features.

Our verdict
Good points:Feature Box system; bright picture; adjustable height. Bad points:Curious swivel feature; won't auto-detect image source. Overall:Not the cheapest TFT monitor around but still reasonable value. Certainly worth considering despite its minor flaws.
