A digital radio about the size of a deck of cards.
Although slightly bigger than the Perstel Adapt DR-101 reviewed here the Pure Digital PocketDAB 1000 is only about the same size and weight as a deck of cards and sports an integrated aerial, removing the need for a cumbersome, telescopic stick.
It features a central button for flicking between stations and adjusting volume, which allows you to operate the PocketDAB one-handed. Setting it up is incredibly simple - just slip in three AA batteries, select the player's auto-tune facility and stations will automatically be located and stored - our player managed to find 42 channels. The PocketDAB then automatically remembers the 10 most-listened-to stations and stores them in a favourites list for quick selection.
Four buttons on the front of the PocketDAB are used in conjunction with the two-line screen to scroll through the menu. This lets you display programme information, manually program stations and change sound settings.
Aside from the £170 price tag - enough to buy a budget stereo system - it's major downside is its inability to pick up a signal while indoors, which makes the supplied mains adapter rather pointless.

Our verdict
Overall: A nice device but far too expensive and it only works well outside.
