McAfee VirusScan 2004

The latest version of this well known anti-virus software.

After a very quick installation, the immediately noticeable difference between this and previous versions of McAfee VirusScan is the interface. The last version employed Internet Explorer-style windows as the configuration dialogue boxes. This has been ditched in favour of a straightforward box with tabs, which is a great improvement. Moreover, all the important aspects of anti-virus protection are set up during the installation, which means no complex configuring to do afterwards.

McAfee software generally has a good reputation for virus protection and this edition is no let-down. It managed to successfully detect and remove the prolific MS Blaster worm and also features a new diagnostics utility that can pre-empt worm attacks.

Outlook Express users will be glad to know that this version is better integrated than before, so you are well protected against email-borne viruses. Also, you can scan all your email folders before installing the program in case you already have a virus lurking in your inbox.

McAfee has decided to omit its firewall software from this version of VirusScan but we suggest using Zone Alarm, which is free and available from the Downloads section of our website.
