A handy camera for occasional users.
If you'd like a digital video camera to record all of those happy holiday moments but don't fancy splashing out a few hundred pounds, then the Trust 732AV could be a happy halfway house for you. Costing £120, the 732AV looks like a tiny version of a digital camcorder, complete with a flip-out screen that acts as a viewfinder and for previewing pictures and videos. It's so small that it can slip into a coat pocket.
Despite its small size, Trust has managed to squeeze in a 3.3x megapixel digital camera that can also record video footage onto a Compact Flash memory card. Capable of recording 10-frames per second - less than half of TV's standard 25-frames per second - this camera won't compete with a dedicated video camera but it's fine for internet and email use.
Trust supplies the 732AV with a 32Mb memory card, which equates to 6.5 minutes of video footage. If you upgrade to a larger 512Mb card (about £80), you can boost recording times to a much healthier 100 minutes.
You're not restricted to video though, as the 732AV can be switched into full digital camera mode. At full resolution you can take 30 photographs before the supplied memory card is filled. If those two modes aren't enough, you can also use the device as a webcam or digital voice recorder.
Even with all its features, we found the camera very easy to use. The controls are conveniently placed, with separate buttons for taking photos and video, and we found that both of these options record good-quality pictures - although not outstanding. Part of this is due to the lens, which is a basic model that doesn't offer an optical zoom.
We also found that any recorded sound was tinny. At this price though, you can't expect all the whistles and bells. Trust has created a product that straddles the divide between digital video and digital photography, which is also a lot of fun. However, it's not as accomplished in either discipline as a dedicated device.
