A USB removable storage device.
USB removable storage devices have grown in popularity now that capacities have increased and prices have fallen. As most PCs don't need a driver to use one of these devices, they look set to replace the age-old floppy disk.
Sony is the latest company to release a product into the already crowded waters with its Micro Vault range and the company has brought its flair for style and quality to the table. We have reviewed the 256Mb version but there are also 64Mb and 128Mb versions available.
Most noticeable is the docking station, which sits on the desk and connects to a spare USB port. For those of you who don't have USB ports on the front of your PC, it saves you having to fiddle round the back every time a file needs to be copied. The Micro Vault is the smallest device of its type that we have seen and uses USB 2 to transfer all 256Mb files in less than 20 seconds. It also comes bundled with an application to password-protect access to it.
The flip side is that the Sony name carries a hefty price tag and less stylish competition can be picked up cheaper.
