A device with printer, scanner, fax facilities and more...
The Brother 3820CN may not be great looking but its features are worth a second look. As its multi-function device (MFD) moniker suggests, it's an all-in-one printer, scanner, fax and copy machine but also has other features such as memory card slots.
The Photo Capture Centre is a real selling point as it allows you to pop in your memory cards and print images or documents without using a PC. The control panel is easy to use and the paper feeder for multiple pages is a nice touch.
In our tests, print speed for normal black text was three pages per minute, which is fair. It managed one and a half pages of mixed colour and text per minute and one minute for an A4 colour photo. The photo print quality was clear with good use of colour.
You can scan documents up to 600 x 2400dpi, which is fine for email, OCR and image-editing applications. An A4 page at 300dpi took 47 seconds to scan and the adjustable lid helps when dealing with thick documents or books.
It's not the cheapest MFD around but if you haven't got a PC, it may be just what you need.

Overall:
Performs well without a PC but a bit bulky and expensive.
