Simple clear advice in plain English

Iomega Super DVD Writer

A cheap DVD writer that reads and writes to most formats.

If you want to upgrade your PC with a recordable DVD drive, you have two choices. If you have a fat wallet and like an easy life, buy the external Plextor PX-708UF. It connects in a trice and will read and write to every recordable CD and DVD format, with the exception of DVD-RAM. Alternatively, if you want to spend £100 less and are familiar with the business end of a screwdriver and the inside of your PC, consider the internal Iomega Super DVD Writer.

What it lacks in ease of installation though (to be honest, internal drives aren't that tricky to install), the Super DVD Writer makes up for with formats. It reads and writes to the same formats as the Plextor, but can handle DVD-RAM too. How much of a bonus that is depends on what you plan to use recordable DVD for, but at least you'll have all the bases covered.

The Super DVD Writer is slower than the Plextor drive and it takes twice as long to write to or read most discs. It's still no slouch, though - it can fill a 4.7Gb DVD in about 15 minutes (a few minutes longer for DVD-RAM) and a 650Mb CD in about three.
