Simple clear advice in plain English

X-oom Movie Clone

Back your data up on DVD.

Copying DVD movies is illegal in the UK, even if it's for your own use. Nevertheless, there seems to be a growing trend for DVD 'backup' software - programs that let you create copies of DVD films onto blank discs. Movie Clone is such an application and a brief disclaimer on the rear of the box is the only deterrent against 'unauthorised duplication of copyrighted material'.

This aside, Movie Clone works with all recordable DVD formats and is easy to use. At its most primitive, you can make a straight copy of a movie disc, complete with menus, special features and digital surround soundtracks. Most commercial DVD movies make use of the format's dual-layer capacity, but many current recordable DVD drives will only copy to single-layer discs, so the software allows you to shrink the original content to fit. This can either be done by cutting back on the extras, or by compressing the movie. The latter, however, has a slight impact on picture quality.

Movie Clone undoubtedly works well, but it's difficult to recommend something that can be used for illegal purposes.
