Simple clear advice in plain English

Philips JackRabbit JR32RWDVK

A DVD player, 32-speed CD-RW drive and CD audio player in one neat package.

On paper, the JackRabbit from Philips seems like a nice idea. Being an external device, it connects to a PC via USB 2 and, with the supplied software, writes CDs and offers DVD movie playback.

It can also operate as a standalone DVD player for use with a TV or CD-player when connected to a home stereo.

All necessary cables are included, such as S-video, composite video, phono and digital audio for those with Dolby Digital decoders.

A 'blue-button' can be activated to access the internet and search for updates for the device.

DVD playback is smooth and audio quality good. Everything is managed by the remote control and on-screen menus.

Although it can play MP3 digital music files straight from a CD, there's no way of identifying each track as there is no LCD screen - not helpful when playing through a stereo.

There's also the inconvenience of having to unplug and reconnect the player if you want to watch a DVD on the TV or record a CD on the PC.

A nice idea, but a standalone DVD player plus an internal CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive cost less.
