Paper is the bane of modern living. Even in these days of secure electronic documents, everything from pet insurance to party invites still arrive on paper and finding important documents frequently descends into a rummage through a pile of paper.

Scansoft's PaperPort has been saving PC owners with scanners this indignity for several years and the latest version is even more capable than the last. Effectively, PaperPort is a smart filing cabinet. You scan your documents (electronic or paper) and save them into a folder. PaperPort also records the content of each document using OCR technology. The result is that you can search all the documents you have scanned in by typing in a word that occurs in one of them.

As well as that, PaperPort scans in forms and marks the areas you need to fill in, meaning all your form filling can be done on your PC instead of loading your printer with a form and hoping the printing lines up.

Users can also make PDFs of their scanned documents. It's undoubtedly very clever and we'd recommend it to everyone if it wasn't for the very high price.
