Review: Samsung L83T digital camera

A 'Midget Photographer' with high quality results

image-samsung-l83t

The oddly named L83T Midget Photographer camera is not, on the whole, much smaller than other tiny digital cameras such as those in the Pentax Optio range.

It does offer good-quality snapshots, though, and an easy-to-use interface.

The 2.5in screen on the back is relatively small by current standards, but while the lens and flash are also small, that's to be expected on a camera such as this, and it doesn't detract from the image quality.

It has a 3x zoom lens and a top resolution of 8.2 megapixels, with both shake reduction (if you have wobbly hands) and face detection to make your portraits and family shots look better. There's no viewfinder, though, so it's necessary to rely on the screen for composition. It uses a rechargeable battery (the charger is supplied) which offers something like 200 shots.

Image quality is very good in the main, although it's susceptible to noise at higher ISO settings (which is to say, in lower light conditions). There are easily selectable modes for various scenarios, and the menus are easy to follow. It's also fairly quick to start up from the time the power button is pressed, all of which makes the L83T a good choice for the occasional snapper.

Vista compatible: Yes
