The MP 101 gives you the freedom to listen to your MP3 collection anywhere in your home.
If you've got a PC packed full of MP3 files, the odds are that you only get the chance to listen to them on your computer, or when you're using a portable player.
However, the Netgear MP 101 allows you to listen to your MP3 collection in your front room, bedroom or anywhere round the house. It uses a wired or wireless network connection to stream MP3s from your PC. All you need is a stereo with phono connector inputs.
Installation starts with your PC - where the server software will need to be installed. Once done it sets about scanning your PC for MP3 and WMA files. It will also import tracks and playlists from the Windows Media Player library. Failing to use this application will leave you with no choice but to use the software to recreate all of your playlists.
Next, you need to turn your attention to the MP 101 and follow the detailed instructions in the clear manual to connect it to a suitable hi-fi and network.
We found it an easier job using a wired connection, where you just connect a network cable between player and PC.
Using wireless is trickier, you may find yourself having to manually configure some settings. It sounds fine in practice but it is a little fiddly using the MP 101's tiny screen. Once working, though, it's a very easy product to use.
The remote control lets you browse through the menu system to select a track by genre, artist or album using the small display. It's simple and means you shouldn't have to reach for a CD ever again.
Aside from a slightly tricky wireless set-up, and having to recreate playlists inside the server software, the MP 101 is a good product; forget those CDs.
