CCS PC Tracker

Keep tabs on your notebook

PC Tracker is designed to help the police recover stolen notebook or desktop computers. The package consists of a metal plaque with a unique ID number, and software that lets you keep tabs on your machine's whereabouts.

In tests, the company was able to tell us the time and our physical location when using the test notebook. Impressively, it made no difference whether we connected to the internet from a fixed line or a mobile phone.

Unfortunately, PC Tracker is not completely foolproof. It will remain operational if the thief tries to reinstall Windows, but it can be rendered useless if your hard disk is reformatted.

In order for it to be effective, your stolen computer will have to be used on the internet. Without an online connection, the software is unable to track its whereabouts. And while the ID tag is useful for identifying a stolen notebook, it can be removed easily enough.

PC Tracker is useful in some situations, but only against thieves that aren't very computer savvy.
