TDK DVW-A080412N

An eight-speed DVD drive from TDK.

Alongside our award-winning LG Electronics Super Multi DVD Rewriter, the TDK DVW-A080412N is one of a new generation of eight-speed drives.

We were eager to get to grips with the unit but, unfortunately, our test results of its performance were far from impressive. It took almost 25 minutes to copy 4.7Gb of data from a standard DVD containing a variety of file types, which is slow in comparison to other 8-speed models.

Tests to determine its writing ability also failed to yield positive results. TDK claims the drive can copy a full DVD in less than eight minutes, but in our tests it failed to reach its 8-speed maximum. Users may get better performance by experimenting with DVD types, but the drive is supplied with just a single 4-speed blank DVD.

On a positive note, the TDK is compatible with both plus and minus DVD formats, so any discs it produces will be compatible with most home DVD players. Included in the package is Nero Express 6 - a software suite that should cover all your CD and DVD burning needs.
