Simple clear advice in plain English

Buffalo Linkstation

A good alternative to a USB hard disk

Home networks are a great way of sharing data between PCs. But in order to access shared files, the PC on which they are stored has to be permanently switched on.

The Buffalo Linkstation behaves much like an external hard disk, but it can be shared across a network. By storing files in this way, you can access them without the need to keep a PC on.

More impressively, you can also access files stored on the Linkstation via the internet. Thanks to an integrated server, you can download files via a web browser or FTP software. This could come in very handy if you've forgotten to bring an important document to a meeting.

This added function comes at a premium. Whereas 200Gb external hard disks can be bought for £100, the 120Gb version of the Linkstation costs £149. Larger versions are available (up to 250Gb), but the price jumps quite heavily.

Despite this, the Linkstation is a good alternative to a USB hard disk, and a great way to enhance your home network.
