JVC Everio GZ-MC200

While most digital camcorders use DV cassettes, the Everio GZ-MC200 uses a miniature hard disk. This 4Gb Hitachi Microdrive (included in the package) is large enough to store up to an hour of DVD-quality video.

We were very impressed with the clarity and detail in our test shots, which were on a par with those produced by a DV camcorder. Its 2-megapixel lens also produced good still photos, but these aren't equal to those taken by some digital cameras.

Uniquely, the GZ-MC200 saves each video sequence as a separate MPEG file. This reduces the need to fast forward through a tape to find a specific point, as each new shot can be previewed.

One of the camera's biggest selling points is its stylish and compact design. Unfortunately, its awkward, small buttons will take some getting used to. We were also quite disappointed by its poor image stabiliser. If you plan to make use of the 10x optical zoom, you'll need a very steady hand.

The GZ-MC200 offers great performance in a compact package. Standard DV cameras give the same image quality for less money, but if you want a hard disk-based alternative, it is an attractive proposition.
